What is a School Team? ![]()
School Teams are groups of people - parents, teachers, community
residents, students and others - who get together to plan and implement
methods to get more kids walking and biking to school. School Teams
usually begin by organizing Walk + Bike to School Day events, and Walk + Bike to School Buses, which then may lead to comprehensive Safe Routes to School (SR2S) programs in their neighborhoods, with the right leadership and tools.
Join a School Team
School Teams are forming around Oregon, and you may be able join one in your neighborhood.
1. Click here to go to the schools list and see if one has formed yet.
2. If not, then you may be interested in forming one yourself. See below for more:
Form a School Team
Find out who is interested - talk to the school principal, teachers, parents, PTO, city/county officials, SAFE Kids Coalition members, neighborhood association, churches, bike coalition, youth/community group or other related non-profit organizations, police department, etc.
Get endorsements and contact information - get the principal and the city to endorse WTS Day, and collect detailed contact information on everyone interested.
Organize a neighborhood meeting - try to get a room in the school, or in a neutral place such as a local café, church, or other meeting place, and invite everyone on your list.
Find a leader(s) - either yourself or someone else needs to take the helm, inspire others and take the time to organize the team. This should be someone talented that the team will trust.
Keep everyone informed - make sure that everyone understands how the event will work, and is informed of/involved in every action that affects the team and moves the event forward.
