I'm an Elected Official
As
an elected official you understand the value of safe streets and
communities. But did you know that walking and biking to school can
actually make the streets safer, lower the crime rate and make
communities nicer places to live?
When kids and parents walk and bike to school, more neighborhood residents are out on the streets watching out for each other, which makes it harder for crime to take place.
More kids and parents on the sidewalks and streets means that drivers feel less inclined to speed, making traffic calmer.
And more kids and parents on sidewalks and streets creates a more social, livable community!
There are barriers, though. Many parents will not let their kids walk and bike to school because of stranger danger, distance and dangerous walking/biking conditions. All of these factors can be improved. Some are easier to overcome than others, which is why we are organizing a statewide Safe Routes to School movement.
If you are interested in learning more about planning a Safe Routes to School program in your community, just follow the link below, and we will walk you through all the steps necessary to make your community a better place to live!
A representative from Oregon Walk+Bike to School can come to your community and present our knowledge about Safe Routes to School, and we can advise you on a course of action. We are also able to provide ongoing technical assistance through a Technical Service Providor contract with your City or County. For more information, contact our Safe Routes to School Director
